In 1973 on a southern Iceland a volcano erupted on the largest Island of
Heimaey This island is located in
Vestmannaeyja Archipelago. Locals,in an attempt to redirect it from their harbors, began pumping cold seawater and this was successful.
What is exciting about the volcanic basalt formed from this volcanic eruption, is the huge Rock formation that sits on the sea cliff. Its taken on the form of a huge elephant and is a delight to see and a hugely popular tourist attraction.
