In 1973 on a  southern Iceland  a volcano erupted on the largest Island of Heimaey This island is located in Vestmannaeyja Archipelago. Locals,in an attempt to redirect it from their harbors, began pumping cold seawater and this was successful.

What is exciting about the volcanic basalt formed from this volcanic eruption, is the huge Rock formation that sits on the sea cliff. Its taken on the form of a huge  elephant and is a delight to see and a hugely popular tourist attraction.
