Great commercials are always remembered and highly effective as an advertising tool. There are many different methods that are used to make them more enticing and appealing to potential customers. one of these ways, is the deliberate placing of hidden messages within them, which are perceived on a subconscious level, this is referred to as "subliminal messaging'

Subliminal messaging within advertising, has been banned in the UK and Australia, for some considerable time. In the US, however, it is not although it appears to be a gray area. As an example, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can in some cases, remove a Broadcaster's license, if it is proven that they have used this method. According to the FCC they:

...sometimes receive complaints regarding the alleged use of subliminal techniques in radio and TV programming. Subliminal programming is designed to be perceived on a subconscious level only. Regardless of whether it is effective, the use of subliminal perception is inconsistent with a station's obligation to serve the public interest because the broadcast is intended to be deceptive.

To further confuse the issue, there has been complaints received concerning the US artist Will-I-Am, who is currently a Judge on the UK singing talent show 'The Voice'
There have been numerous complaints, regarding his clothing, which allegedly 'advertises' his music. Will_I-Am wore a blue and  yellow Jacket on his first appearances as a Judge, with signs and wording, that its believed, were worn in a deliberate attempt to encourage people to buy his music. With regards to subliminal messaging, this is complete nonsense as the signs and wording are clearly visible. Within Subliminal messaging, they would be hidden within something. This also leads to an interesting idea, that the UK recently trialed, known as  'product placement'

This is where , advertisers are allowed to place their products in full view, during Television programmes. The only condition that they follow is that prior to, and after each commercial break, a symbol telling the viewers that there is deliberate product placement is shown. A large "p' is shown at these times.

So in the worst case scenario, Will-I-Am  may have been alleged to be doing this. However, as he is never and has never, been seen without similar clothing, this is unlikely. Its more likely, due to the misconception surrounding the concept of subliminal messaging..
