Upon first impression, New York City’s disposal method for Subway cars seems like an environmental violation. For years, NYC has dumped their rusty, old Subway cars into the ocean without any fear of backlash. To show the world the strange procedure, Stephen Mallon spent three years photographing the process and the photos he captured are shown below. Don’t worry!  There is a good reason for this. Be sure to read all the way to the end to find out why it is done this way.

The process is meant to help combat the damage that humans have done to natural coral reefs. Although it might seem like a small consolation considering we shouldn’t have been so reckless in the past, it is a step in the right direction for our marine environment.

See, there is a happy ending after all! If you were initially shocked by the photos because they appear to show horrible pollution, you are not alone. In fact, that is what really draws people to Mallon’s work and makes his photos so impressive.
