Look at this wonderful collection of self-portraits by Pablo Picasso! You can compare the first piece to the last and you will find that the two are in fact… strikingly different. If you then compare the work of Picasso from the time he was a young man until the time of his death, you will notice a common thread - you can tell the paintings were done by the same man.

But if so, how should we understand the following quotation from Picasso himself: “The different styles I have been using in my art must not be seen as an evolution or as steps towards an unknown ideal of painting… Different themes inevitably require different methods of expression. This does not imply either evolution or progress; it is a matter of following the idea one wants to express and the way in which one wants to express it.”

Now… forget about what you have just learned and try to understand these pieces of art work by yourselves!
