There was an innovative campaign in the UK, a few years ago that was designed to challenge misconceptions about people with various disabilities. The campaign featured positive images of people with disabilities, in a variety of employment and social settings. A good example, is that of a young man, sitting on the train station platform, singing along, to songs by the popular group, Radiohead, on his ipod.
The video, shows him briefly then focuses on a young woman, staring at him and then the words "relax its just anther Radiohead fan" appear on the screen, as he sings. When the camera zooms out, The message "See the person not the disability" appears. When we saw these stories about how people cope with different challenges daily with their disabilities, it seemed to raise interesting questions, about how shifting the focus from the disability and seeing the person really shines through.
In other words if the person with the disability can remain positive and focus on what they went to accomplish, why do some people assume that the disability will make it impossible? Everyone deserves to have the same right to maximize their potential. Here are ten inspirational stories of different people with various different disabilities, who demonstrate clearly, that when the going gets tough, they get going
