Recently close to extinction, the California pipevine swallowtail butterfly is now repopulated again. The person who is to be thanked is Tim Wong, California Academy of Sciences aquatic biologist.

The man built a special greenhouse for the butterflies using the space of his own backyard. Thanks to the ideal conditions the butterflies could grow and repopulate. The sunlight, the nice breeze and the temperature fluctuations were perfect for that.

The biologists found out that these butterflies are only feed on one plant – called the California pipevine, which was not easy to track. Tim Wong was happy to find the plant in a botanical garden, and was allowed him to take a few clippings. As he created the butterfly greenhouse, Wong brought the 20 caterpillars to it and let them grow. Today, 3 years later, the home of the butterflies is thriving.
