2-year-old boy shoots parents after finding loaded handgun on table

A 2-year-old boy shot his mother and father after finding a loaded handgun that was lying on a table located next to their bed.

The police said that the incident happened in the house of the family in West Bath, Maine, on the morning of Wednesday.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry told local news media outlets that the 2-year-old boy had picked up the firearm on the nightstand and shot his dad in the head and his mother in the leg.

The boy also managed to hurt himself when the recoil of the gun struck him in the face.

Luckily, the parents of the kid, who are 25 and 22, did not suffer any life threatening injuries.

The kid, the mother and father were rushed to the Mid Coast Hospital for treatment.

The 3-week-old newborn of the couple was also in the same room when the incident, luckily, he was not hurt.

The baby is now with their grandmother.

Talking about the incident, Sheriff Merry said:

The question of how the boy was able to pick up and fire the weapon is of great concern and is being investigated. This situation, while disturbing, could have had an even more tragic ending. We are thankful that the injuries were not more serious.

The authorities have identified the gun as a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

The Sagadahoc County District Attorney’s Office is now investigating the incident with the local police.

None of the people that got involved in the accident were identified by the authorities.
