A surgeon from Kosovo said that they successfully removed an old Nokia like phone from the stomach of a prisoner after they swallowed the entire device.
It is believed that the phone was present inside the stomach of the prisoner for 4 days.
The 33-year-old prisoner, who was not identified, was admitted to the Pristina University Hospital’s gastroenterology clinic last week.
The prisoner had been complaining of stomach pain for several days.
The doctors realized that the man had swallowed a small phone because of the weird stomach pains that he had.
Skender Telaku, who led the medical team that performed the surgery on the prisoner.
Skender Telaku said:
By endoscopic means, so without cutting the stomach, we took out the phone divided into three parts.
The patient told the doctors that the phone was in the stomach of the prisoner for around 4 days.
The procedure lasted around 2 hours and was carried out without any complications.
Skender Telaku added:
It was the battery that concerned us the most …. the corrosive battery acid could have leaked into his stomach. It was like walking in a minefield but luckily everything went smoothly.
The police took the mobile phone, which is believed to be a model from the early 2000s.
The authorities have not yet found out how he had swallowed the phone and how he got it.
The medical team on the other hand believes that the device was smuggled into the prison, where the prisoner was serving his sentence.
The old phones are used to illegally contact the outside world.
Police neither confirmed nor commented on the incident.
