Philippines To Raise Age Of Sexual Consent From 12 To 16 Years Old

The Philippines is currently set to raise the age of sexual content from 12 years old to 16 years old.

The Philippines is currently one of the very many countries that still has the lowest age consent in the world.

The bill that is set to pass comes after years of campaigning.

UNICEF praised the move by the country.

Patrizia Benvenuti, the chief of child protection in the Philippines, said:

This is a victory for Filipino children. Pegging 12 as the age of consent is really not consistent with scientific studies on brain development.

In 2015, UNICEF carried out a study that found out 1 in every 5 children that are at the age of 13 to 17 years old experienced sexual violence.

The numbers are concerning, considering that child pregnancy is frequently noticed in the Philippines.

The bill will automatically make having sexual activity with a child under the age of 16 illegal.

Anyone found guilty in during such thing can face life in prison.
