There’s a lot of mystery surrounding the origins of one of the world’s biggest domesticated cats, the Maine Coon. Some contend that the cats arrived in Maine with the Vikings; others say they are the result of cats crossbreeding with raccoons; still others believe that they could be descended from Marie Antoinette’s Turkish Angora cats. The point is, no one knows where they came from or why they exist, but Maine Coon casts are huge.

Not surprisingly, one impressive Maine Coon named Stewie holds the Guinness World Record for “longest cat.” In 2010, Stewie was measured at 123 cm (48.5 inches) from his nose to the end of his tail. But, even an average-sized Maine Coon can make a normal house cat look like a runt. Males can weigh up to 35 pounds, while females can reach a weight of nearly 30 lbs. Where do you think Maine Coon’s come from? Take a look at the photos and make a folktale of your own, you just might be right.
