Philadelphia Will Pay $9.8 Million To Black Man Who Was Wrongly Imprisoned For Nearly 30 Years

Black man from Philadelphia, USA that was wrongfully imprisoned for nearly 30 years will be getting $9.8 million from the government of Philadelphia.

It is also one of the largest settlements in the history of Philadelphia.

In 1991, Chester Hollman III was arrested by the police for the murder a student at that time.

Hollman, who was 21 when he was arrested, had no prior convictions and was working as an armoured car driver.

The man ended up spending around 28 years in prison for a crime that he did not commit just because he was driving a white SUV that was similar to the one that was used in the crime.

Hollman was charged with fatally shooting a student after a botched robbery attempt despite the fact that he managed to maintain his innocence throughout the entire sentencing.

But everything changed last year.

A judge ruled that the police and prosecutors at that time that were handling the case had created conviction through fabricated statements that had been coerced from witnesses.

The prosecution and law enforcers also withheld vital evidence that could have helped find the actual person that had committed the horrible crime.

On December 30, 2020, the settlement was announced.

It was revealed that Hollman, who is now 49, will be receiving $9.8 million in compensation.

During an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer recently, Hollman said:

There are no words to express what was taken from me, but this settlement closes out a difficult chapter in my life as my family and I now embark on a new one.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hollman, may he spend quality time with his family and enjoy the new world.
