16-year-old shelter dog smiles the entire drive home after being adopted by kind woman

A 16-year-old shelter dog was found smiling the entire drive when they were being brought home after being adopted.

Kathryn LaRoche, was living alone during this pandemic and she was having a hard time.

To make things worse, her 20-year-old cat passed away, so she decided to open her home to another older animal.

During an interview with The Dodo, she said:

It was a really heartbreaking experience, but made me realize how great senior pets can be.

After browsing the Indy Humane website, she came across Sonny.

The 16-year-old dog was found as a stray dog in the streets of Indianapolis.

He was microchipped, but the organization failed to contact his original owners.

LaRoche fell in love with the dog and decided to go to the shelter so she could  meet him.

Recalling the moment, LaRoche said:

I spent the days before the meeting making sure I had everything ready for him at home. So that if he did come home with me he would have beds and toys.

When the day came, the woman walked straight into the shelter and asked to meet him.

The volunteers brought out Sonny, and when the moment came, she just know the dog would be coming with her.

She continued:

They said I could spend about 30 minutes with him to make a decision, but I went in to fill out the paperwork after five. I could tell he was a bit nervous meeting new people, but he was just such a happy, easy-going old guy that I knew he’d be perfect for me.

While they were on their way home, the dog was just smiling.

LaRoche went on:

He did make it very clear from the first night that he wanted to sleep in the bed with me under the covers. So although I hadn’t originally planned on him being a bed dog, he is one now!

Sonny just enjoyed watching everything from the car.

He also started to play with the toys that are present in the house of LaRoche.

LaRoche said the dogs is really amazing.

Talking about Sonny, she said:

It’s only been a few days, but I can tell he’s already starting to trust me more and he has become super cuddly. He always wants to be in the same room as me. He honestly seems like a dream dog and I can’t believe I got to bring him home. He still has so much love to give and I feel really lucky that I get to spoil him for the rest of his days.

Such an adorable dog, and thank you LaRoche, you did an amazing thing by adopting the elderly dog.
