Australian man to spend over 2 years in jail for punching convicted child sex offender in prison

A man from Australia will be spending over 2 years in prison after they pleaded guilty to punching a convicted child sex offender while they were in jail.

The man will reportedly spending 2 years and 6 months in jail for assaulting a fellow prisoner.

Leonard Janes Stanley was in the watch-house at Hervey Bay Police Station last year when another inmate was placed inside his cell.

The 33-year-old man got into a conversation with the inmate and later found out that the man was a convicted child sex offender. 

After some time, the man punched the other man right in the face.

This caused him to fall backwards and hit the toilet.

Talking about the incident, he said:

They put me in a cell with him – what did they think was going to happen?

The inmate had to get surgery after the incident.

Stanley was then charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.‘

The court recently heard on how Stanley suffered from drug and violence issues in the past.

It took nearly a year before a result was handed down the court.

The case was held up due to coronavirus restrictions.

The Hervey Bay District Court was told on how the 33-year-old was just 2 months into parole when the incident happened.

The incident happened in June of last year.

Stanley has attended a substance abuse and resilience course in the time since the assault happened.

Stanley pleaded guilty to one charge and was sentenced 2 years and 6 months in jail.

According to a report by LADBible, the man will be eligible for parole on October 18, 2021.
