At 107 years old, twin sisters in Japan are now officially recognized as the world’s oldest identical twins.
The Guinness World Records have confirmed that Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama are the world’s oldest identical twins.
The announcement was made on September 20, 2021, which falls on Japan’s Respect for the Aged Day, a national holiday.
The twin sisters beat Kin Narita and Gine Kanie who were aged 107 years and 175 days.
Umeno and Koume were born on November 5, 1913 and had 9 other siblings.
The two sisters grew up on the island of Shodoshima, which is located in the west of Japan. They were separated after primary school when Koume moved to the Island of Kyushu to work as a maid. Koume settled there with a husband while Umeno started her own family in Shodoshima.
The two sisters said that they only met again on a bunch of occasions but it was pretty rare.
The certificates of the sisters are now posted on the two nursing hommes where they both live in.
Guinness said that the memory of Koume is faltering with age, her family were made up that she had achieved the award she so often talked about, which she and her sister often joked about beating.
Umeno was in tears when she got the award.
The thing is, Japan is known for having a pretty old population.
According to official reports, around 29 percent of the population in Japan are aged of 65.
Japan also has the world’s fastest aging population, which includes 86,510 centenarians.
Not only that, but Japan is also the home of the worlds “oldest living person”, 118-year-old Tanaka Kane.
