A 27-year-old pregnant mother from Michigan, USA, is currently being hailed as a hero after she managed to save 4 girls from drowning.
Alyssa DeWitt, the woman, took her children to First Street Beach Pier at Lake Michigan on Tuesday.
Upon arriving, she noticed a group of girls, all under the age of 15, going into the water.
She was concerned because the weather that day was not that well.
Recalling the incident, Alyssa said:
I happened to look up and saw one of the girls waving her arms towards me and immediately knew something was wrong. I got up, pulled my kids out of the water and ran out onto the pier.
The woman called 911 right away, however due to strong wind waves, the operator could not hear her.
The woman dropped her phone and did everything by herself.
She went on:
I didn’t know if 911 could hear me and I didn’t have time to wait and find out. I set my phone down next to me, hoped they could hear, and I started trying to pull the girls out.
Despite being 5 months pregnant, the woman lay on her stomach and pulled the girls over the rocky pier.
She managed to save all of the girls.
She added:
Every time I’d get one of them halfway up, a big wave would come smashing into us and knock them back down or almost pull me over. My turning point was when one of the little girls looked at me and said, ‘I’m going to die.’ That was it for me and I was like ‘I’m not going to let you die, I’m going to get you out of this water, I promise.’
After rescuing the 3 girls on the edge of the pier, 4 of them went back to the shore to rescue another girl, who had injured her leg.
Alyssa says adrenaline allowed her to save the girls.
She said:
I honestly do not know how I did it, it was pure adrenaline at that point. Right after I got everybody onto the beach, the ambulance and the police cars came flying into the parking lot.
The thing is, the hero woman also sustained some injuries after the saving.
She sustained a swollen wrist.
Luckily, she was brought to a hospital after the save and she along with the baby are both okay.
The thing is, there is another hero in this tory.
The mother said that her 6-year-old daughter was another hero during all of this.
She managed to keep her 2-year-old brother at bay whilst their mother was saving the girls.
Talking about her daughter, she said:
Between me screaming into the phone that I needed help and me screaming to the kids what I needed them to do to get them out, I was also turning around and screaming to my son not to come because it wasn’t safe. He was very scared and repeatedly tried to run to me on the pier. My daughter would pick him up and take him back to the sand and she was so calm and I’m extremely proud of her, she did a great job.
The mother says she was glad that she was there to help the girls.
She went on:
I’m just extremely grateful that I was put there that afternoon. There was nobody else on that half of the beach, just me, my kids and that group of girls. Had I not been there they wouldn’t have been seen.
Such an amazing thing to do.
