A 13-year-old girl was left in the ICU for 2 weeks with horrifying third degree burns. Authorities said she set herself on fire while trying to copy a TikTok challenge.
Destini Crane, who is from Portland, Oregon, sustained 3rd degree burns on her neck and arm while trying to copy a trick on TikTok.
In the stunt, someone drew a shape with hairspray or alcohol on a mirror before setting it on fire.
She carried out the stunt in the bathroom of their house.
On May 13, 2021, her mother found a candle, a lighter, and a bottle of rubbing alcohol inside it.
Kimberly Crane, the mother, said:
I was in the living room talking with my mom, and I heard her scream my name. So I went and opened the bathroom door and everything was on fire. Destini was on fire. Things in the bathroom were on fire.
Kimberly rushed her daughter outside her house and managed to remove her burning shirt.
A neighbour noticed what happened and they called 911 right away.
The girl was taken to intensive care, where she has been ever since.
The 13-year-old girl has not been able to speak since the incident.
Doctors that are treating the girl told the mother that it will take months to recover and regain mobility again, especially in the neck, fingers, shoulders, and her injured arm.
The mother said that she wanted to share what happened to her daughter in order to increase awareness of the danger of such stunts.
Tiktok is a platform where children, as young as 13, are performing dance acts of dangerous acts like the one that was done by Destini.
TikTok did not release a statement about the incident.
