A 6-week old baby in Romania passed away after they were held underwater 3 times during an ultra-orthodox baptism.
According to reports, the baby suffered a cardiac arrest during the baptism.
The baby was rushed to a hospital, where they passed away.
An autopsy later revealed that the baby had liquid inside his lungs, which was a result of the baptism in the Romanian Orthodox Church.
A manslaughter investigation against the priest’s that did the baptism has been launched.
The incident happened in the northeastern city of Suceava, Romania.
Baptism rituals are usually carried out by the church and it involves immersing infants in holy water 3 times in a row.
After the incident, the church is currently facing a lot of pressure to change the extremely old ritual.
Over 80 percent of Romanians belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church.
