A couple in India got married on an airplane after they found a loophole in the coronavirus rules in the country.
The family reportedly hired a plane for themselves and their wedding guests.
A video of the incident went viral after the incident.
It shows a Boeing 737 packed with the wedding party.
Camera operators were also present inside the plane as the couple got married in the sky.
A video of the ceremony was shared on social media with the caption:
Rakesh-Dakshina from Madurai, who rented a plane for two hours and got married in the wedding sky. Family members who flew from Madurai to Bangalore after getting married by SpiceJet flight from Bangalore to Madurai.
Rakesh and Dakshina went on to bypass the restrictions by hiring a SpiceJet aircraft.
The thing with this wedding is that it comes amidst a very rough time in India.
India is currently recording around 250,000 covid cases on a daily basis and has registered over 4,000 deaths in just 24 hours.
The country has reported over 300,000 deaths caused by the virus so far.
People who watched the video were not happy with the wedding.
One person said: “This is the epitome of privilege. With so many fundraisers about where people can’t afford to even get CT scans, this person thought he could use his money to flout rules. This is pathetic and I do not wish the best for the couple at all.”
Another user said: “Come on guys, government is not preventing you to get married in front of all your relatives, they just want you to be safe.”
After the images and video of the incident went viral on social media, the authorities have stepped in.
The airline is currently under investigation by the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation)
The crew of the airline flight that carried out the stunt have been suspended.
DGCA released a statement about the incident, saying:
We have de-rostered the crew and directed the airline to lodge a complaint against those not following Covid-19 appropriate behaviour with relevant authorities. We will take strict action.
The spokesperson for SpiceJet talked about the incident with IndianExpress.
In a statement that they released, they said:
The client was clearly briefed on Covid guidelines to be followed and denied permission for any activity to be performed on board. The group was repeatedly briefed on the safety norms to be followed by the operating cabin crew and advised to follow the protocols laid down by DGCA including restrictions on photography and videography.
Authorities in India did not reveal if the wedding attenders along with the couple that got married would be arrested for violating covid travel restrictions amidst a deadly surge in the country.
