Dallas police officer dies after being struck by drunk driver

A police officer from Dallas, Texas, USA, passed away earlier after they were struck by a drunk driver as the cop was responding to a car accident call.

According to reports, the incident happened on the early hours of Saturday.

The officer was not identified.

However, the Dallas Police Department did reveal that they were blocking traffic in the northbound lanes of the North Central Expressway at Walnut Hill Lane at around 1:25 am.

The man was standing outside his squad car with his emergency lights on when a man, who was believed to be drunk, stuck their speeding vehicle into the police car.

The man was driving a Kia Forte.

The officer was rushed to the Baylor Hospital in downtown where they passed away.

The police said that the suspect has been described as a 32-year-old black male.

He was taken into custody with pending charges.

The Kia Forte was destroyed in the crash.

The suspect and the female passenger of the car did not sustain any injuries in the incident.

The woman is currently being interviewed by the police in their investigation.

DPD Chief Eddie Garcia confirmed the officer passing away and the incident.

Chief Eddie Garcia said:

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that this morning at approximately 0125 a [Dallas Police] officer, working an accident scene, was struck and killed by a DWI driver. Our department is once again mourning, but we are heartened by the strength of his family. Godspeed my brother.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the police officer that passed away, may their soul rest in peace.
